Canada Launches a National Quantum Strategy
15 Jan 2023 – In January 2023, the Government of Canada formally unveiled its National Quantum Strategy, a comprehensive plan backed by a federal investment of $360 million. Announced in Waterloo, Ontario by Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne, the strategy is designed to amplify Canada’s strengths in quantum research, grow quantum talent, and accelerate commercialization of quantum technologies.
It defines three core missions – quantum computing, quantum communications, and quantum sensing – reflecting areas where quantum innovations could be game-changers in fields like drug discovery, secure communications, climate modeling, and navigation.
The initiative includes funding pillars for research ($141 million), talent development ($45 million), and commercialization ($169 million) to ensure breakthroughs in labs translate into Canadian businesses and jobs. A new Quantum Advisory Council of experts (co-chaired by quantum pioneers from the University of Waterloo and Simon Fraser University) will guide the strategy’s implementation.
The National Quantum Strategy represents a milestone in Canada’s commitment to quantum technology. It builds on over $1 billion of federal quantum investments since 2012, aiming to secure Canada’s lead in a global “quantum race” alongside the U.S., Europe, and China.
Implications: The strategy is expected to create thousands of jobs and a projected $139 billion quantum industry in Canada by 2045. It signals to researchers and companies worldwide that Canada is open for quantum business – offering funding, infrastructure, and a pipeline for talent. By prioritizing quantum computing hardware/software, quantum-safe communications, and sensors, Canada is positioning itself as a well-rounded quantum ecosystem hub, ensuring scientific excellence turns into economic and security advantages for decades to come.
